Induction Project Activity
  • Please read the following and either alone or in a small group (2-3), develop a PBL.
  • Each group should use the appropriate wiki page to post their assignment and resources (see Step 4 for links).
  • For helpful tips on wikispace editing and the use of the discussion board, please see the "Wiki How-To".

Step 1

Develop a scenario / problem related to current curriculum for students to solve

There is a retention basin on the side of the new high school. The science department wants to put a wetland in the retention basin. The school district doesn't want to provide funding for implementation of the wetland. Convince the district why a wetland is not only an environmentally sustainable solution, enhancing our LEED certification, but will also provide cross-cirricular learning opportunities for all. For your final product, propose a design for the new wetland with detailed specs, costs, benefits, and uses.

PBL Examples:

Step 2

Create a series of guiding/scaffolding questions to assist students in developing solutions/answers to stated scenario/problem

  • What are some main advantages to constructing a wetland on the school property?
  • What native plants and animals would be found in a PA wetland?
  • What are the costs associated with the construction of a wetland?
  • What types of classes could be held at the wetland?
  • What can students learn from a wetland?

Step 3

Supply supportive web resources pertaining to each guiding/scaffolding question.

  • Hyperlinks to valid educational resources
  • Embedded educational videos
  • Links to Webquests
  • Embedded Slideshare files
  • Images/Diagrams
